There is something about summer nights that lend themselves to the wonders of outdoor concerts, and if you find yourself contemplating a vacation in Telluride the first week of July, we are offering a little something extra that may give you the gentle nudge towards booking the getaway! The RIDE Festival 2021 is an outdoor music festival that takes place in the shadows of the pine trees climbing up the slopes of the San Juan Mountains and in a variety of local venues. Lasting 10 days and featuring the creative talents of over 20 musical artists and bands, this festival has been an important part of the summer landscape since its beginnings in 2012!

How to Best Enjoy the RIDE Festival 2021

There is no wrong way to enjoy the show! You can purchase a single-day pass (the 4th of July shows promise to be spectacular), a weekend pass, a week pass, or a pass that encompasses every day of the 10-day event, which runs from July 2 through July 11th. The performers are an exciting mix of up and comers and seasoned veterans, but do not do yourself a disservice and only attend the performances of your favorite performers; some former up and comers of the RIDE Festival include Pearl Jam, Widespread Panic, and Thievery, and if you only watch the ones you know, you may miss out on the beginnings of a megastar group!

Bring your lawn chairs, your picnic blankets, and spend hours upon hours in the shadow of the mountains, listening to the music that makes your toes tap and your fingers snap, and if you choose not to spend every minute of the festival following the music, you can spend your off hours enjoying the wonders of our favorite mountain town. The festival gates open at 10 AM every day, ending at 11 PM every day except Sunday, and if you aren’t super interested in purchasing passes, but still want to hear the music, consider volunteering at some of the venues and earn a general admission weekend pass to the show! The NightRIDE venues (the nighttime concerts) include the Sheridan Opera House, Wood Ear, and Moon at O’Bannon’s, and if you haven’t purchased a festival pass, you can still attend these events by paying a cover fee.

As the summer holidays roll around, you may find yourself with some extra vacation days and an urge to explore the cool mountain towns in Colorado. If your journey finds you headed in the direction of Telluride in late June, early July, the Plein Air Festival promises to be an event that will make you wonder why you haven’t been this way sooner! Taking place from June 28th through July 4th, the 20 to 25 artists taking part in this festival are destined to make you fall in love with an art form you may not have recognized before now.

What Is Plein Air Art?

Coming from the French expression “en plein air,” which translates into, “in plain air,” this type of art is just that: masterpieces created in the great outdoors. This unique festival offers the opportunity to watch masters at work as you explore the wonders of our town. This artform became famous in the middle of the 1800s, and some of the world’s famous painters took the art style and made it their own, including Claude Monet, William Merritt Chase, and Mary DeNeale Morgan. What you will find is some of today’s top artists creating beauty out in the fresh air as you shop, hike, and play.

During the last three days of this festival celebrating plein air, the pieces the artists worked on so fervently during the early portion will be judged and then auctioned off to eager buyers. Perhaps you will find that you and your family earned a place of honor on one of the paintings, and even if you are unable to purchase the piece you star in, you will forever have the bragging rights of being a plein air artist’s subject during the Telluride Plein Air festival of 2021! If you do manage to snag a portrait, you can feel good knowing that 40% of the sales made during this wonderful event will go to the Sheridan Arts Foundation, to help encourage and support future plein air artists.
