Sledding in Telluride

Some of our favorite moments growing up involved a sled, (although sometimes we only had a piece of cardboard in place of a sled) a hill, and lots of snow, and when you vacation in Telluride, you can relive those magic moments in a variety of ways. Introduce your children to the joys of a day on a sled, climbing the hill, sliding down, and repeating over and over until everyone is ready for warmth, hot chocolate, and some relaxing minutes spent inside our Accommodations in Telluride mountain escapes. This guide to sledding in Telluride in our Colorado mountain village will help you create memories you will never forget.

Dress for the Adventure When Sledding in Telluride

Winters are cold in Colorado, and as such, if you want to enjoy more than a few “flights” down the hill, dressing in warm and waterproof clothing is highly recommended. The snow is bright, which makes sunglasses a smart addition to your winter gear, and because the reflection of the sun off the snow can cause a sunburn, (even in the winter) sunscreen is definitely suggested!

Finding Your Sled

As you might expect from a winter town, there are multiple options for finding a sled, including renting from Telluride Nordic Center (500 E Colorado Avenue) or purchasing an inexpensive plastic one from Timberline Ace Hardware (200 E Colorado Avenue). Colorful innertubes can also provide a thrilling ride down the hills, providing a little extra stability and more cushion from any bumps that might be in your path.

Firecracker Hill, Telluride Town Park

Ok, you have your warm and waterproof clothes, your sunglasses to shade your eyes, and a sled or innertube that you have rented or purchased from a business in town; what are we missing? Oh, right, a hill for sledding down! Firecracker Hill, located at the back of Telluride Town Park, is where we began our love affair with this wholesome activity, where we introduced our own children to the sport, and where you can carve an hour or two out of your tourist activities for your own Telluride sledding adventures with your family. It’s a bit of a trek from where you park to the hill, but it is easy to find; just follow the paths created by orange cones and listen for the squeals of excitement from all those who have already begun to play!

Things We Have Learned

We have learned a few things in all our years of Telluride sledding down Firecracker Hill, including that a thermos of hot cocoa waiting in the car will be much appreciated, as will a warm place to return to after the sun sets behind the mountains.
