It is true that some shops and restaurants do rest during the off-season, but you won’t be sacrificing adventures simply because you are here when the crowds aren’t. The best restaurants will welcome you with attentive staff who may have more time to offer tips and hints on things you can see or do, and the lines will be shorter. The cutest shops may also have the biggest sales as they are clearing out fall merchandise to make room for winter, and they want your business too. And you will have a larger selection of Accommodations in Telluride seasonal vacation rentals in Telluride to choose from, as less people will be looking for lodging; it’s a can’t-miss situation that you will remember forever!

The Colors Will Take Your Breath Away
If you have traveled much, you already know that fall in Colorado looks a little different than it does in the Eastern states, with blazing orange and fiery gold being the two dominant colors, although there will be some crimson accents tossed into the mix as well. Late September through mid-October (during the off-season) is prime leaf viewing time, and Telluride has many prime leafing spots to explore. Honestly, the fall foliage is something we mourn when snow is blanketing the landscape, that fire in the countryside really does take our breath away. We’ve experienced fall in Telluride for many decades, and it never, ever gets old! Below, we have listed a couple of our favorite leaf peeping spots, so dress warm, keep your camera ready, and prepare for an adventure that will fill your heart with color!
The Telluride Gondola
The easiest way to see the fall foliage is simply by boarding the free Telluride Gondola that takes guests from the town of Telluride to the mountain every day. It will close down for a few weeks before ski season starts, but in mid-October it will still be running, and the “fire show” will stun you into silence. It’s a great time to take family pictures, the glass of the gondola allowing for a beautiful backdrop of autumn trees, the colors bringing a beautiful glow to the faces of those you love most and if you are one of those families that takes Christmas card photos, THIS would be the perfect shot!
Bridal Veil Falls
Waterfalls and fall color are the most beautiful combination, and Bridal Veil Falls is our favorite spot to capture both in photographs that we will hang on our walls. The parking area located at the base of the falls can be reached by taking Forest Service Road 648 (also known as Black Bear Pass Road) off Colorado Avenue. Bridal Veil Falls Trail is a short one, but it is a steep one, so be prepared to breathe heavy once you can breathe again after losing it from the stunning vision that surrounds you. The trail takes you through the trees, so this might be the closest you will get to paradise during your vacation in Telluride. Cherish the moments and take plenty of pictures so you never forget the vibrance of the world around you during your hike.
San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway
If you are going to be in town a while and you love a good car ride, the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway provides another way to enjoy the stunning fall foliage of Colorado. The byway is a 236-mile loop that takes travelers through some of our state’s most charming and visually pleasing towns, including Telluride, Ouray, and Durango. It can be driven in about 5 or 6 hours, but we hope that you take it a little slower than that, appreciating the beauty of the fall landscape and the small towns you will be driving through, making memories that will be ones that you treasure forever.
The Deck of Your Accommodations in Telluride Seasonal Sanctuary
Your favorite views of the fall foliage may not take any more effort than stepping out onto the deck of your fall retreat! Our homes and condos are located in the most scenic spots of town and as you sit in your chair, falling in love with the beauty that is visible from all angles, the glass of wine in your hand will be much more tastier than the water bottle you lugged with you on your Bridal Veil Falls hike earlier in the day! Additionally, most of our properties offer hot tubs out there on those big open decks, so why not savor the sights while submerged in their hot and bubbling depths? There’s no shortage of wonderful ways to relax when you choose Accommodations in Telluride for your accommodations, and although that is true during any season, the views may be a little shinier, a lot more fiery, and as close to perfect as possible in the fall months!

Festivals to Remember
The festivals of Telluride are spectacular during any season, but during your fall visit, they may shine a little brighter. Below, you will find a few of our favorites, perhaps helping you narrow down the exact time you will want to visit, just so you can attend the one that catches your eye!
Telluride Blues & Brews Festival, September
Held right around the start of fall (September 18-20 in 2026), the Telluride Blues & Festival is loved by all who love music, beer, and other people who love both as well! Playing not just blues music over the course of its three days, guests can expect to hear an exciting blend of funk, indie, rock, jam-band, gospel, and soul in addition to the classic blues that will speak to your heart. Performances will be heard on multiple stages all over town, both inside and out, and performances at local clubs late at night may remind you of your younger days when life was all about the music. And because parents can’t always travel kid-free, the festival, in addition to offering yoga morning classes, will provide a kids’ zone that includes climbing walls, bounce houses, even a fun parade!
Telluride Autumn Classic, September
The Telluride Autumn Classic is a celebration of classic cars, usually occurring the weekend after the Blues & Brews Festival, and offering three days of not just cars, but motorcycles and aircraft as well. This is the festival that attracts gearheads from all over the world and is where you will see the high-end cars that you may not have ever seen in real life before. Tickets start at $108, but we recommend that you purchase the platinum pass if you can, costing more but offering access to all events, including keynote speakers, live music, and a really fun Poker Run Rally that you really don’t want to miss. A Cruise to Colorado parade is something else you won’t want to miss, and if you feel the need to be a part of it, you’ll be happy to know that participating won’t cost you anything; it is 100% free to be a part of the parade! Our 4-Day Autumn Classic Fine Arts Festival is held at the same time, adding art to the mix and making this festival perfect for everyone!
Telluride Horror Show, October
As we near the end of fall foliage season, spooky season begins, and the Telluride Horror Show is a horror movie festival (think Sundance or Cannes) in which the goriest and scariest movies are the winners! The movies being shown aren’t just horror flicks, though; the festival is a blend of horror, suspense, dark fantasy, thriller, sci-fi, and even some dark comedy. (Think Death Becomes Her from the early 90s) Named one of the nation’s top five Halloween festivals worth traveling for, the Telluride Horror Show has actually become a cult classic in the festival world!

Exploring Telluride in Fall
We’ve touched on a lot of fall specific activities on this page, but there are some time-honored traditions that can be, and should be, participated in during any season, something as simple as exploring the town of Telluride, dipping in and out of shops and boutiques, dining at the best restaurants, and just soaking in the ambience of quiet, restfulness, and peace. In just a few weeks, the trees will be bare, the snow will be blanketing the ground, and skiers will add an electricity to the town as ski season springs to life, but right now, during this sweet respite, the quiet will satisfy. We’ve listed a couple of shops and restaurants that you may want to visit during your stay below.
Cashmere RED, 221 E Colorado Avenue
It may still be fall, but days will be chilly and nights will be cold, making a visit in Cashmere RED something that is almost necessary. This boutique is known for offering the coziest, and warmest, luxury clothing in town and will be one of your favorite shops to visit.
Smuggler’s Union Restaurant & Brewery, 225 S Pine Street
On the chilly days of fall, guests can warm up with a burger and a beer at Smuggler’s Union Restaurant & Brewery and if you prefer wine or a cocktail that will warm you from the inside out, they offer those as well! The Don Draper is one of our favorite cocktails, made with Hirsch Bourbon, Orange Cherry Jubilee, and Angostura Bitters.
