Ski, Sled, Skate, Bike and More
Telluride is a popular year-round destination these days, but things really culminate during the winter when snow arrives for good. Of course skiing is big here, and Telluride Ski Resort has it all. From downhill skiing and snowboarding to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. With over 2,000 skiable acres, Telluride has a wide variety of terrains, and trails for all skill levels too, from easy bunny slopes to the black diamond runs beloved by adrenaline junkies everywhere.
Skip the crowds and head out for a day spent skiing cross-country accompanied only by the sound of your breath and your skis swooshing along the groomed trails, or push deeper into the back country and make your own trail through the snow. If you need to get even deeper, book a heli-skiing adventure. It’s the best way to safely get to those pristine, untracked spots in the quiet backcountry, and it’s an exciting ride to boot.
The mountain bike lovers in your group, can still enjoy biking even though there may be snow on the ground. A fat bike can handle rocky, muddy, icy, and snowy trails on its soft, wide tires. Enjoy a leisurely ride on quiet historic trails with the kids or hit a single track for an exhilarating ride.
If you brought the kids along, rent sleds for the entire family and head to Telluride Town Park’s Firecracker Hill and sled ‘til you drop. It’s a great fun-filled family activity for kids of all ages. Telluride Town Park also has an indoor professional-grade ice rink and an outdoor rink where you can practice your spins and jumps, plus there are several spots to ice skate in Mountain Village too.
Book a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride for you and your partner. Enjoy the sound of sleigh bells as the horses trot through the snow, pulling the sleigh through the beautiful, silent forest.
Sightseeing, Shopping, Craft Beer and More
When it’s time for a break, do some sightseeing. Both historic downtown Telluride and Mountain Village have plenty of restaurants and bars, from taverns and brew pubs to five-star dining experiences. There are unique local shops to browse and art galleries to check out too. Be sure to stop by Telluride Truffles after a long day skiing the slopes, because a nice, smooth, chocolatey truffle is a good thing.
Visit the Telluride Historical Museum, located in the old miner’s hospital downtown, where you can see the Telluride Blanket (the only remaining, fully intact example of a brown/red/white twill fabric from the Anasazi), and many other exhibits on the life of the area’s early residents and more. Kids will love to try the museum’s gold-panning, too.
The Telluride Mountain Village Gondola connects historic Telluride with the alpine-style Mountain Village and offers its riders an incredible 360-degree view of snowcapped mountains, forests, waterfalls, and aerial views of both towns. It’s a vital part of the public transportation system, and it’s pet-friendly, fully accessible and free!
If you’re ready for refreshments, make a leisurely stop in a brew pub like Smuggler’s Union Restaurant and Brewery. Make it easy on yourself and just order one of their flights to go with your steak or try the popular Oak, the New Fat Alley for craft beer, sandwiches and more. For a casual atmosphere, grab a brew and a slice at Brown Dog Pizza.
Come Home to Comfort
As you can see, your daylight and evening hours are destined to be filled with exciting adventures which makes the comfort and luxuries available in our seasonal sanctuaries something you will look forward at the end of every day. Providing the warmth that is generally lacking outside, electric heaters and fireplaces that can be woodburning or gas will keep your toes and nose the right temperature, with the fireplaces adding a touch of warmth as well! Many of these winter cabins may provide a hot tub bubbling merrily on the back deck, giving guests a bird’s eye view of the snow-covered mountains while keeping them warm as well! Throughout the home, small yet welcome touches continue the theme of keeping you warm, including colorful blankets tossed over the back of sofas, and in some cases fireplaces in the master suites!
Fully equipped kitchens will allow you to keep the coffee always brewing and perhaps mix up a few batches of your grandma’s favorite hot chocolate as well; add a bit of Baileys and make these sweet treats Irish for some extra enjoyment. Soaking tubs in the bathrooms will give guests a place to prepare for the day or can be used as a gateway to sleep, providing relaxation and warmth to muscles that are tired and chilled.
At night, the sky will amaze you with its dramatic darkness intertwined with the twinkling of a billion stars, but you may not see much of it as you will be huddled in the embrace of cloud soft beds, lying beneath blankets that provide just enough warmth to keep you comfortable but not so much as to make you feel as if you are experiencing your own personal summer! Sleep is a luxury as we age, not lasting long enough or taking us deep enough into the world of dreams, but in Telluride? Every night will be filled with the deepest of sleeps and the happiest of dreams. Wake up every morning with an unfamiliar feeling, you know, the one where you don’t still feel tired and you only go for the coffee because you like the test, not because you need the punch of adrenaline it provides?
