New Year’s 2024 Activities in Telluride

Hosted by Telluride Arts HQ, the inaugural New Year’s Eve party will be a bash to remember. Dance the night away with tunes spun by DJ Castle. Enjoy “small bites” and a midnight champagne toast. The 21+ event fun starts at 9 p.m. on December 31, 2023, and runs until “late.” While not required, you’re urged to dress in your best silver and gold. Tickets are available on the event website.

New Year’s Eve Torchlight Parade

Celebrate the beginning of 2024 in a way only a ski resort town can. Every year, instructors from the Telluride Ski & Snowboard School light up the slopes. The parade starts at the top of the Gondola and zooms down into the Mountain Village core. The parade is visible from both Mountain Village and Telluride and starts at 6:30 p.m.

SAF Holiday Concert Series Motown NYE Gala

The party finishes out the organization’s holiday concert series. The Motortown All-Stars will descend on the historic Sheridan Opera House on New Year’s Eve. Motown fans will groove to hits like “Tears of a Clown,” “My Girl,” Signed, Sealed, Delivered,” “You Can’t Hurry Love,” and many more. The group is made up of former members of The Temptations, the Miracles, and the Contours. General admission includes a glass of champagne, party favors, and a balloon drop after the clock strikes midnight. Reserved balcony seats also include hors d’oeuvres and an open bar. The fun kicks of December 31, 2023, at 10:30 p.m.

Gondola Rides

The free gondola provides a 13-minute ride full of the beautiful scenery of Telluride – from over 10,500 feet. You’ll be able to access hiking and biking trails, as well as skiing and snowboarding opportunities. Load yourself and your gear onto the gondola in Telluride or nearby Mountain Village. The gondola is fitted with racks made especially for your snow sports equipment. Ride all the way to the top or stop at the midpoint – Station San Sophia – for access to the hiking trails. Operating hours are daily, 6:30 a.m. – midnight.

Winter Sports

Telluride in the winter months is all about winter sports. The Telluride Ski Resort has some of the best slopes in the area, with runs appropriate for beginners all the way up to the most advanced skiers. Experts looking for some new or different ski experiences may want to explore the backcountry, or helicopter skiing – where you jump from a helicopter and ski your way down the mountain. Other interesting winter and New Year’s activities include cross-country skiing, dog sledding, snowmobiling, snow shoeing, ice skating, ice climbing, or the relaxation of a sleigh ride.

Fat Tire Mountain Biking

The San Juan mountains surrounding Telluride provide a variety of terrain for a unique riding experience. For more advanced bikers, more challenging trails lead down old mining roads, through basins, and high above the box canyon. Longer, more difficult trails join moderate skill level trails linking former railroad tracks throughout the valley and further west. If you’re just starting out there are trails fit for you, too. Make sure to schedule your rides for a few days after you arrive. You’ll need to get used to the thinner mountain air before extreme physical exercise.

Historic Telluride

If you’re looking for a year-round attraction to explore without packing up and heading out, you’ll be glad you chose Telluride. The town itself is an attraction to be explored this New Year! Wander historic Telluride, which was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1964 due to its significant role in the history and development of the American West. Begin your exploration with a stop at the town museum to learn about the town’s evolution from Ute tribe summer camp, to mining camp, to boom town, and finally the ski mecca you may be enjoying on your New Year vacation. Shop in stores and boutiques, many of which are housed in some of the town’s original buildings that date back to the 1800s.
