Our families can be the best part of our lives and the worst part of our days, but there is one member that will nearly always bring us joy. Our four-legged children live to be loved by us, protecting our homes against burglars while always providing a hug, a lick, a warm body to cuddle with when life gets to be too much, but what do we do when we vacation? We leave them with other people, treating them like another chore that needs to be done while we are off living our best lives, but your Telluride getaway and stay in our Accommodations in Telluride retreats will differ, because this year, you are choosing our pet friendly models to make your own. This Telluride pet-friendly guide will help you find fun things to do outside the home during your Colorado adventures.
Telluride Gondola
First of all, one of the most popular ways of getting from point A to point B is via the free gondola that takes visitors up the mountain, and if you are out and about with your cute Cavalier spaniel, you don’t have to worry about taking an alternate route. Select cabins on the Telluride gondola are leashed dog friendly, and you can tell which ones those will be by the sticker featuring a black lab with a red tongue hanging out of his mouth attached to the glass. The best views can be seen from these glass and metal cabins, and some of your best pictures will be taken inside as well.
The Galloping Goose
The Galloping Goose is another mode of free transportation in Telluride, this one taking you from place to place as the Gondola takes your from up to down and vice versa. Welcoming your pup as long as he is leashed, the small buses (large vans?) operate on a loop around the town of Telluride, arriving at each stop every 20 minutes and helping to keep travelers and residents warm and dry, including their favorite fur children.
Telluride Town Park, 500 E Colorado Avenue
Telluride Town Park is the center of many nonskiing activities, serving as a concert venue, a 4th of July festival spot, and many other extracurricular activities that you may not expect from a park, and yes, it too is dog friendly. Offering a pool (not dog friendly), sports courts, a toddler playground, an ice rink in the winter months, and serving as a popular fishing spot, all we ask is that you please pick up after your pooch, especially as children run mild throughout the park.
Dirt Dawg, 215 E Colorado Avenue #1
Doggos like to accessorize too, and Dirt Dawg is where we take our pets as a special treat. Also offering grooming services, a self-wash station, and a selection of food and pet treats, this one stop shop will become your pet’s favorite activity while out and about in Telluride.
Hiking Trails
The Telluride countryside offers a variety of trails that encourage hikers to bring their pets along with them, helping them to release any excess energy and ensuring that they will sleep well every night. The San Miguel River Trail allows leashed pets, offering a 6-mile-long hike out and back, following along the boundaries of the town of Telluride and also providing pet friendly swimming holes to help you and your pooch to cool off during the summer months. If 6 miles seems a little long, the Jud Wiebe Memorial Trail is just 2.7 miles long, but substitutes length for a rather steep incline that novice dog hikers may not be able to conquer. There is no mention on whether your dog needs to be leashed, but we think it is safer for all pets if they are. The Bear Creek Trail, 5.2 miles long, is a good one for owners and their leashed pets, easy to navigate and offering views of Bear Creek Falls. Please clean up after your pet at any of the trails.
Time to Dine
Telluride is a very dog friendly town, and pretty much any restaurant with a patio will allow your well-behaved and leashed furry friend, including Stronghouse Brew Pub (283 S Fir Street), Black Iron Kitchen & Bar (568 Mountain Village Boulevard), and surprisingly, the sophisticated and upscale Cosmopolitan Restaurant (301 Gus’s Way). Water will be served to pets at all the restaurants, and many pets will be doled out as well.
No Sacrificing Comfort or Style
Some vacation rental companies won’t allow pets at all and others will, but only in properties that need renovations or some revamping. With Accommodations in Telluride, however, the only difference between our pet friendly retreats and our no pets allowed escapes is simply whether or not pets are allowed. There will be no sacrificing comfort, luxury, or style when you choose any of our pet friendly sanctuaries, so reserve your favorite today!
