Oh how we love summer in Telluride. Winter is exciting and filled with adventure, but between the holidays, the winter sports, and school and work, it can often feel like a merry-go-round that will never stop! In summer, however, there is no urgency to get anything done and everything we do is done at a much slower pace. We walk slower, we take longer to wake up, and although we play hard, our playtime is geared toward relaxation rather than competition! If your summer journey brings you to our mountain town of Telluride and a stay in our Accommodations in Telluride seasonal sanctuaries, this guide to our top summer events in Telluride will keep you busy, just not TOO busy, while filling your days with fun!
Telluride Americana Music Festival, July 13-16, 110 N Oak Street
Summer and music go together like peanut butter and jelly, and the Telluride Americana Music Festival celebrates the singer/songwriters of the world! Offering four days of performances by some of America’s future superstars, we seriously can’t urge you enough to take part in this summer event, sticking around for the fundraiser benefitting the Sheridan Opera House on closing day.
Telluride Fine Art Festival, July 28th-30th, 568 Mountain Village Boulevard
Have you ever noticed that the most scenic spots in the world also seem to attract the most talented artists? It’s as if the beauty of the landscape is embedded in the souls of the artists who make it their job to add even more beauty to the world, and the Telluride Fine Art Festival will be showing some of local artist Jonah Ward’s finest works! Over three days and in three separate locations, guests can explore not just Mr. Ward’s masterpieces, but those of a multitude of other artists, perhaps finding that perfect piece to hang over the desk in their den.
Telluride Jazz Festival, August 11th – 12th, 500 E Colorado Avenue
On another beautiful day in August, the Telluride Jazz Festival proves once again the symbiotic harmony of music and summer is a relationship that deserves to go on throughout eternity, especially as this cool jazz festival takes place outside in Telluride Town Park. Offering a breathtaking backdrop of mountains, mature trees, and the opportunity to relax as you can practically see the musical notes drifting upwards into the heavens, this festival is about as laid back as you could imagine a jazz festival would be!
Telluride Mushroom Festival, August 16th – 20th, S Oak Stret
We can see you scratching your heads in confusion already. A mushroom festival? What on earth? Well, no one can say that our mountain town residents don’t have a sense of humor, and this is one of the Telluride summer festivals that is the perfect example of the whimsy of our ways! Mushroom lovers from all over gather together to celebrate everyone’s favorite fungi, and as you explore everything mushroom, we think you will be surprised that you are learning something while having fun! A Mushroom Festival Parade on Saturday morning is the highlight of this quirky fest, featuring people dressed as their favorite mushroom, a drum circle, and so much more. Dancing, singing, and drumming can go on into the wee hours of the morning, and the delicious mushroom foods being served (jerky and inoculated kombucha, to name just a couple) will delight! Vendors will be selling mushroom themed gifts that you never knew you needed until you were holding that coffee mug shaped like a mushroom in your hot little hands. If you do nothing else during your summer of relaxation, the Mushroom Festival will ensure that your season is a rip-roaring success.
Telluride Blues & Brews Festival, September 15-17th, Telluride Town Park
Hey, don’t call us out on September being a fall month! According to the calendar, summer lasts through September 20th or 21st, and this music festival offers the perfect way to celebrate the end of longer days and lazy nights! This is one of the Telluride summer festivals that will bring you back to Telluride Town Park, where mountain views will take your breath away and the music echoes throughout the canyon, allowing for twice the enjoyment. Encompassing not just blues, but indie, rock, funk, roots, jam band, gospel, and soul, there is sure to be a band that will speak to your soul, and the 21 breweries represented in this summer’s end festival might just make you love it all!
