Top Five Local Only Breweries in Telluride

Telluride has plenty of beer pubs, as well as a few breweries in Telluride for your beer sipping pleasure. This historic mountain town has really embraced the craft brew lifestyle. Of course, every brew head has their own favorites, so if you ask a local for their favorite brew spot, you’ll get a variety of answers. That said, here are a few breweries in Telluride to start you off on your own craft beer journey.

Telluride Distilling Company

Well, our very first option here isn’t really a Telluride brewery at all. But it’s sort of close – it’s a distillery. The Telluride Distilling Company is worth mentioning, even on this list. What could be more western, or more Telluride, than making your own liquor? The Telluride Distilling Company produces award-winning gluten-free vodka and peppermint schnapps, ginger beer, and a few more delicious specialties. While you’re here sipping your refreshing margarita made with Agave Spirit during happy hour, order up a couple of their brats. Their sandwiches vary from season to season, with sausages and brats made with wild boar, elk, rabbit, buffalo, or whatever the “Game of the Moment” may be.

Open Daily: 12pm – 10pm

Ouray Brewery

About an hour from Telluride, to the north/north east is Ouray and the Ouray Brewery. The Ouray Brewery usually has around 16 hand-crafted beers on tap for your drinking pleasure. If you’re out near Ouray after a day of ice-climbing, skiing, or hiking, it’s worth the stop. Take a tour of the Telluride brewery, then sit down to enjoy a beer or two.

Family owned and operated since 2010, they have a wide menu selection of pub fare too, with burgers, soups, salads, and more to go with their award-winning craft beers. Try their Camp Bird Blond Ale or the Box Canyon Brown. If the weather is nice, head up to the covered rooftop patio where you can sip your brew and enjoy a 360-degree view of the snow-capped mountains surrounding Ouray.

Ouray Brewery
607 Main Street, Ouray CO
Open Daily: 11am – 8pm

Stronghouse Brew Pub

This on-site brewery and restaurant is a relative newcomer to Telluride, but the historic building it’s located in has been around since 1892. They’ve already established themselves as a great place for a beer and a brat. They’re rated #4 on USA Today’s 10 Best Brew Pubs in America for 2021. From the rustic, exposed stone walls, wood floors and peaked wood plank ceiling, to the 1880’s mahogany bar runs almost the length of the space, the atmosphere is like an upscale saloon.

As expected, there’s a rotating menu of craft beers brewed on-site, and ordering a tasting flight with six four-ounce pours is the best way to get started. Their Honey Ginger Blond Ale seems to be a popular choice, and the pub fare has an interesting mix of options, including a Hot Salted Bavarian Pretzel, Spicy House Pickles, fries (you have to add the beer cheese dipping sauce), brats on a hoagie, chili, a grain bowl, and the customer favorite Alpine Mac & Cheese.

Smuggler’s Union Restaurant & Brewery

Smuggler’s is not only a brewery offering up award-winning house-made beers, but it’s a restaurant with a farm-to-table menu that includes house-made sausage. Named after a local 100-year-old silver mine, this local favorite has been around since 1996. The menu leans toward typical ‘brew pub’ fare, but the locally sourced ingredients for their burgers, tacos and grilled steaks raise this pub grub to a higher level.

With up to 20 tasty beers on tap at a time, make it easy on yourself and just order their signature flight paddle. If you’re going to try just one brew, order the Daly’s Blonde, a 2018 bronze medal winner at the Great American Beer Festival. For those in your group who’d rather have a cocktail than a lager, they have some fun cocktails too.

225 South Pine Street, Telluride CO

Telluride Brewing Co.

Since 2011, Telluride Brewing Company has been brewing and serving up a wide variety of craft beers. You can get their tasty brews at their Tap Room or their Brew Pub. These casual, very laid-back spots are favorites of visitors and locals alike. No matter where you end up, try their Face Down Brown and the Fishwater. Actually, try them all!

Located between Telluride and Mountain Village, the Brew Pub & Taqueria offers yummy tacos from Los Buenos Tacos alongside their craft brews. Eat in their warm rustic dining area or grab a 6-pack (or two) of your favorite brews, a taco kit or take-out and head back to your rental or hike to a nearby scenic picnic spot. If you just want to focus on the brews, head to the Tap Room. It’s a small tasting room, with big flavors. You can pick up a few cans of your favorite for the walk back to your rental.
