Top Five Local Only Shops to Visit in Telluride

The Telluride Historic District includes a large part of the historic old mining town, some of the surrounding residential areas, and the Lone Tree Cemetery (the town’s first cemetery and worth a visit on its own). Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1961, the district also includes most of Colorado Street, Telluride’s main commercial street. It’s easy to spend the day wandering through the historic downtown and browsing the quaint shops and galleries. Here are our picks of the top five local Telluride shops!

Telluride Gallery of Fine Arts

This first spot has been around for over 30 years. The gallery is located in a narrow, historic commercial building, with high painted wood ceiling and warm wood floors. As the area’s oldest established gallery, Telluride Gallery of Fine Arts exhibits contemporary art by American artists, local and regional artists, and more. The gallery owners prefer to showcase “progressive, innovative creatives,” whether they are well-known or are waiting to be discovered. A few of the more well-known artists they represent include Maya Lin and Edward Moses. Plus, the gallery participates in the First Thursdays Art Walk.

Hook

Hook’s is known around town for their hooks (naturally) and their chocolate bars. They feature an amazing array of items that you just didn’t know you needed until you see them. Beside the hooks, they offer bar supplies, art and decorative objects, coffee, tea and cocoa, and those chocolate bars. They also offer a variety of things made here in Telluride like dog treats, lip balm, Fat Alley Hot Sauce (you’ve got to try it) and handmade soaps.

Over the Moon

Locally owned and run by a mother-daughter team who knows what they’re doing, Over the Moon is another one of those great little Telluride shops that has a little of everything that you need. From home décor and kitchen items to high-end skincare products and gourmet foods, you’ll find something you need, either for a gift or for yourself. A few of their gourmet treats include French truffle honey, wild game meats, pasta, caviar, wine, and beer. Pick up a locally made scarf or necklace, some pizza dough mix, gluten-free cookies, loose tea, and more. It’s the perfect place to put together a welcome basket for your guests or a gift basket for a friend, making it a fun place for shopping in Telluride. If you need a cheese plate or crudité plate for a party or just for movie night at home, this is the place to find it. They have a variety of boards to choose from but will make one up special based on your needs. Choose from typical cheese boards (with or without fresh fruit, olives, and nuts), assorted meats and cheeses, seasonal crudité, a coppa plate, or a delicious tray of lobster bites.

Telluride Truffles

Everyone needs truffles! Not only do they make great gifts for the people you love, but truffles make great treats when it’s time to treat yourself. After a long day skiing the slopes or working hard, a nice, smooth, chocolatey truffle is a good thing. Started in 1997, Telluride Truffles has handmade truffles and chocolates with fun names reflecting mountain life-like Black Diamond, Early Frost, Mud Season, Snow Capped, Rocky Top, and Valley Cow. They not only offer up delicious handmade truffles and chocolates, but also cookies, hot chocolate mix and chocolate truffle sauces, chocolate barks, and ice cream in the summer months. The wrapping/packaging is as pretty as the truffles are delicious.

Between the Covers

A lovely old bookstore, Between the Covers is located in a narrow historic building in historic downtown Telluride. This small bookstore has a wide selection of books, including children’s books, regional books, books by local authors and poetry books. They also carry a nice selection of magazines, music CDs, handmade greeting cards, and maps of the area. These days, it wouldn’t really be a bookstore if there wasn’t a coffee shop nearby. The High Alpine Coffee Bar in the back of the store is not only a great place to grab a cup of delicious freshly roasted coffee and a homemade pastry; it’s a gathering spot for the locals and visitors alike. You can enjoy your book, coffee, and bear claw inside while lounging on the comfy sofa, or out on the deck with the mountains as a backdrop. There are regular poetry readings too if poetry is your thing.
