Holidays were perfectly designed for travel, offering that extra day off work, the ability to save vacation days, and when the holiday is Memorial Day, providing the perfect way to kick off the summer adventures. Judging from the fact that you are reading this now, the most important decision, mountains or ocean, has already been made, and we thank you for considering Telluride the ideal Memorial Day destination and for choosing Accommodations in Telluride for your holiday accommodations. This guide will help you see all the fun and exciting attractions in Telluride Colorado you will have to see during your summer kick off to fun, helping you fill every minute with holiday themed activities and restful adventures.
The Gondola Opens for Summer, May 23
If you have visited Telluride in the winter, you may remember your breathtaking journeys up and down the mountain, sitting in a glass cable car and viewing some of the nation’s most stunning snow-covered landscape, perhaps even taking a selfie or two. What you may not know, however, is that it isn’t open year round, closing in April/May and again in October/November for repairs and maintenance. Fortunately, Telluride Memorial Day weekend is the official opening date, allowing holiday travelers once again to ride our country’s only free gondola public transportation.
Starting Your Day Out with Coffee
The kitchen of your Accommodations in Telluride escape does provide a coffee maker or Keurig, ensuring that you are always just steps away from a fresh brewed cuppa, but in a world that begins most days with a visit to their favorite coffee shops, the tradition can be continued during your Telluride adventures. Viceroy Café, located at 333 W Colorado Avenue, is one of our newest coffee shops, and we are here to tell you that we are kind of digging its vibe, as well as loving its coffee selection. Also offering a grab and go menu filled with breakfast burritos, pastries, and cookies, Viceroy Café is a great way to start your day without spending too much time eating breakfast.
Telluride MountainFilm Festival, Memorial Day Weekend
The MountainFilm Festival is one of our country’s longest running of its type, screening the top independent films from all over the world, while giving guests the opportunity to rub shoulders with stars, directors, and producers. Giving a variety of speakers the podium, they discus the issues, excitement, and worries that the industry faces, (AI is really starting to invade Hollywood and no one, with the exception of the money people, are very happy about it.) giving non-movie people a glimpse into the world of Hollywood. Also offering coffee talks, an ice cream social, and various opportunities to meet and greet, the closing ceremony is a picnic/award ceremony that is great fun to participate in.

White Water Rafting Trips
Now that the snow has melted and the days are warming, Memorial Day Weekend offers the perfect time to get out on the waters of the creeks, rivers, and lakes that surround us and for the daredevils in our group, a whitewater rafting trip with Telluride Outside may be exactly the adventure you seek! Offering half day trips on the lower San Miguel River (the upper San Miguel trips typically don’t begin until June) this family friendly adventure is open to travelers that are aged 6 and up and can be THE activity your littles brag about the most!
But What If It Rains?
Although there is a higher chance of snow falling this early in the spring season, on the rare occasion raindrops do fall from the sky, those looking for adventure can find it on the pages of the books sold at Between the Covers Bookstore & Bruno Café. Located at 214 W Colorado Avenue, this independent bookstore is the last of its kind, offering book signings, book clubs, and of course, shelves filled with adventures just waiting to be explored. Bruno Café offers coffee, breakfast, pastries, and even a couple of local beers, enhancing the quality of a rainy day spent exploring the wonders of a local bookshop.
Shopping the Sales
One of our favorite parts of the holiday weekend (aside from the extra day off, of course) are the sales that local shops offer. This is the perfect time to stock up on your summer wardrobe with a visit to Scarpe, located at 250 E Pacific Avenue, and selling men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing and accessories. Down to Earth is another one of our favorite boutiques, located at 236 W Colorado Avenue, a local tradition since the day the shop opened its doors in 1995.
