You may have visited Telluride for ski vacations before, but did you know that our mountain town is also a fantastic destination for mountain biking? With a large number of trails and its own bike park (closed for the summer of 2026), mountain biking in Telluride is sure to make your summer vacation great. This guide will show you how to have all the fun on two wheels.
Telluride Mountain Biking Adventures for Every Rider
Whether you are an expert cyclist, a competent rider, or are just starting out on your mountain biking adventures, the Telluride mountain biking scene is perfect for you. Providing the perfect way to fill a few hours during a summer vacation, the trails and the park are also located close to some of our most popular summer rentals in Telluride. This proximity to adventure ensures that you can spend most of your time riding and very little time commuting.
Why Telluride Is a Premier Biking Destination
Even though we are known for our premier ski resort, we are also considered a premier biking destination. Every ride will be your favorite with the backdrop of the San Juan Mountains adding drama, and getting to the trails is easy with the bike-friendly Gondola, offering a quick connection. The Telluride Gondola is a free transportation system that is also great for taking guests from their condo in Mountain Village to downtown, and vice versa.
Find Trails for Your Skill Level
We especially love that no matter your skill level, you will find Telluride bike trails that match your skill and maybe even challenge you to improve. We’ve listed a few of the most popular trails according to skill level here, so you can easily find the one that matches your ability.
Beginner Biking Routes
- Telluride Valley Floor/River Trail: This trail stretches out alongside Highway 145 and the San Miguel River. Flat, scenic, and wide, it is perfect for true beginners and families looking for a biking adventure.
- Jurassic Trail: There are no dinosaurs on this singletrack that extends about a mile, running along the tree line, just outside Mountain Village.
Intermediate Mountain Biking Routes
- Boulevard Trail: The Boulevard Trail is 2.5 miles long, partially paved, and is also great for hikers and joggers. It starts near Mountain Village center and offers stunning views.
- Village Trail: Also a ski trail in the winter months, the Village Trail can be reached via the Gondola at Station San Sophia. This will be a 3-mile descent.
Advanced Trails
- Wasatch Trail Loop: The Wasatch Trail is not for the faint of heart or less skillful riders. Featuring a 2-mile-long standalone segment attached to a 16-mile-long loop, it is known for its steep climbs, rocky descents, and drop-offs that demand your full attention. The words brutal and intense may have been tossed about when describing this trail.
Technical Challenges
The Telluride bike trails you will explore offer all manner of technical challenges, so be sure to keep that in mind when determining your skill level. You will be riding at an extreme altitude, which could affect your breathing. The trails are often loose, slick, and wet, and rapid weather changes can turn the game on its head. For the expert riders, the Wasatch Trail leaves no room for error, so your skill and focus must be sharp.
Bike Rentals, Guided Tours, and Trail Access
Some travelers might want to bring their own bike along for their Telluride mountain biking adventures. There will be plenty of room in our mountain cabin rentals in Colorado to store your own equipment. If you didn’t bring your own, there are plenty of bike rental shops in the area that will rent you a bike and gear, including Easy Rider Bike & Sport.
For those seeking a guided adventure, perhaps one that is family-friendly, TelluRiders has been the top-rated mountain biking tour guide almost since they opened their doors in 2019. Offering half-day or full-day guided tours, lessons, and all the gear you will need, including bikes, they offer a great way to dip your toes into the mountain biking experience.
