If you’re looking for a break any time of year, the four-seasons location of Telluride is waiting. From winter activities like skiing and snowboarding to warm weather activities like hiking and water sports, you’ll find something to fill your time no matter what your interests are or what time of year you need to get away. If you hoped to pack in a little education into your plans, make sure your itinerary includes some time at the Pinhead Institute.
The Pinhead Institute is a Smithsonian Affiliate organization based in Telluride. The first such affiliate in all of Colorado, it helps promote science-education on both a local and global scale and brings high-level science and technology education to rural Colorado’s residents in a unique and fun way.
Programs at The Pinhead Institute
The Pinhead Institute offers a myriad of programs that deliver science and technology experiences to the residents and guest of Telluride. From Summer Science Camps to the Stargazing Series, No School Science Projects, and more, the institute’s science and technology curriculum is delivered in a way participants understand and through activities they’ll enjoy.
Kids can enjoy the great outdoors and learn by doing fun activities. Camps are outdoor-focused, and a lot of time will be spent outside. Choose from programs like “Dig It!” and archaeology exploration, discover the many sources of energy, or learn about the living things that make up nearly 95% of all of Earth’s species – the invertebrate. There are many other options to choose from at The Pinhead Institute, including custom classes, private classes, and classes presented in collaboration with Telluride Academy. Older campers can even try out the newest experience, Opus Odyssey, which takes them up into the nearby San Juan Mountains to the mystical Opus Hut of Ophir Pass. The nearby lodge is equipped with kitchen, lounge, and comfortable sleeping quarters for a week-long, immersive experience your child won’t soon forget.
