Your summer adventures in Telluride can be as fulfilling and exciting as the winter ones, offering new opportunities to get outside and play. Hiking along trails that lead you through some of Colorado’s most beautiful landscapes, mountain biking along even more trails, and perhaps the most enjoyable activity of all, fishing in Telluride in the lakes and rivers that make Telluride one of the top summer vacation destination spots in the state. Today, we at Accommodations in Telluride want to take a few minutes of your day to explore all the ways our town is an angler’s delight, leading you to the spots where the fish bite the most and then leading you back to our summer sanctuaries where a host of comfortable amenities and wonderful luxuries await.
The Gear You Need
It is possible that you did pack a fishing pole and extra gear in your carryon, but if you didn’t it doesn’t mean you will need to miss out on the fishing adventures you have been dreaming about. Telluride Angler, located at 221 W Colorado Avenue, offers a complete selection of fishing gear, both for rent and for sale, ensuring that you will have everything you need when you pit your wits against the denizens of the waters. And because having choices is always a good thing, if you are staying in our Accommodations in Telluride Mountain Village sanctuaries, you won’t have far to go to rent your fishing gear at Telluride Outfitters. Located at 456 Mountain Village Road, they offer an equally excellent selection of rental equipment.
A Little Help From Some Friends
Now that you are properly equipped, it is time to hit the banks of our lakes, ponds, and rivers. But what if this is your first time in Telluride and you aren’t quite sure of where to go, or aren’t ready to go off on your own, there are more than a few fishing guides that have been doing this for years, promising to show you and your traveling party the best of times. Telluride Fly Fishers, offers half day and whole day expeditions, including flies and terminal tackle while also renting rods, reels, and wader boats for an additional fee. If you have never fly fished before, they recommend signing up for the half day trip and if you fall in love with the sport, you can always sign up for a full day later on. Trips can be booked online or by calling (970) 728-4440. Telluride Angler also offers a variety of half-day and full-day fly fishing expeditions and during the first weekend of June provides what they call Local’s School, where they offer tips and hints on fly fishing and if you are in town that weekend, don’t be put off by the name, Local’s School is open to travelers too.
Solo Fishing Adventures
Not everyone likes to be a part of the group, especially when it comes to fishing, and we understand completely. For those solo adventurers amongst out guests, Trout Lake, located just 15 minutes outside Telluride, is one of our favorite fishing spots, offering breathtaking views and easy access. Fish from the banks or rent a canoe (only non-motorized boats can be used in Trout Lake) and fish to your heart’s content. The San Miguel River offers more places to fish, with the easiest to reach located along CO 145; the high country streams can be reached by hiking or off roading. Some other great spots along the same freeway, include Bear Creek, located about 40 miles outside of Telluride and offering hiking trails, beautiful scenery, and multiple places to drop your line. Scotch Creek is a little closer, about 30 miles away, following County Road 550 and Snow Spur Creek lies about 18 miles outside of Telluride, following along CO 145 closely enough that no extra effort (hiking, off roading) will be necessary.
The Finer Points of Fishing in Telluride
Fishing licenses are required, of course, and those can be purchased at Telluride Angler while you are there renting your rods, reels, and other equipment, or you can go online and purchase it there. The first weekend in June, the same weekend that Telluride Angler offers its Local’s School, purchasing a fishing license is unnecessary, as it is the state’s way of celebrating the summer months with a gift to all anglers. The waters of Telluride are cold ones, even in the summer months, and waders are recommended, ensuring your legs and feet stay dry and warm as you walk out into the center of shallow creeks, seeking the best spots to cast your line.
