While some parts of the world are still experiencing the changing of the color of the leaves at Thanksgiving, here in Telluride, we are excited to welcome the beginning days of winter. In most years, by the third Thursday of November the ground is blanketed in snow and the ski slopes have opened for business, offering exciting adventures for which to be thankful, and if your Thanksgiving journey brings you to our doorsteps, a day on the slopes is just the beginning! Spend your days participating in the adventures we are going to be telling you about in just a few short minutes and spend every evening coming home to the serene sanctuaries that will make you think about starting a new family holiday tradition. This guide to a beautiful and fun-filled Telluride Thanksgiving will show you the wisdom of that very wonderful idea!
Telluride Ski Resort
You may be tempted to forget the feast and spend your turkey day riding the lifts up and schussing your way back down, over and over until your legs are like spaghetti noodles and the cold has taken over your entire body and that’s ok. It’s probably been a while since you felt thankful, spending the weeks leading up to the holiday cleaning and organizing and the day of cooking and cleaning some more, which is why a getaway to Telluride seemed (and still seems!) like the best idea ever. In 2023, the slopes open on Thanksgiving Day, so pack your warmest clothes, bury the turkey you may have already bought in the deep freeze and head west for a holiday on the slopes!
Feasting During a Telluride Thanksgiving
We love a turkey dinner and all the trimmings, but the preparation can drive us batty! Fortunately, there are plenty of restaurants willing to open their doors to you, preparing, serving, and clearing away delicious meals for you and your entire family. Many of the restaurants on the mountain will be open, feeding hungry people with cheer and good will, and Baked in Telluride, found at 127 S Fir Street in Mountain Village, has traditionally offered a Thanksgiving feast that still makes us salivate, even though it has been nearly a year since we were there!
Black Friday Shopping
Although we don’t offer many big box stores in Telluride, on Black Friday, most every shop in town will be open, offering special deals to help kick start your Christmas shopping adventures. Spend this day after the holiday dipping in and out of shops and boutiques, seeking and finding innovative gifts that the recipients will fall in love with. Check out art pieces created by talented artists in the local galleries, (Turquoise Door, 226 Colorado Avenue is one of our favorites) souvenir shops where you can pick up something that will help you remember your adventures in Telluride, (Hitched Telluride, also at 226 Colorado Avenue is a great one!) or something icy that has nothing to do with the snow outside (Elinoff, 204 Colorado Avenue, has shiny jewelry pieces that represent our town and its history, offering one of the kind pieces you will cherish forever!). Even if you aren’t ready to start shopping for Christmas yet, a visit to our sporting good stores will ensure that you are properly equipped for your snowy Thanksgiving in Telluride!
