Winter Sports
Telluride in the winter is all about winter sports. The Telluride Ski Resort has some of the best slopes in the area, with tracks for beginners all the way up to the most advanced skiers. For some different ski experiences, explore the backcountry, go cross-country skiing, or helicopter skiing – where you jump from a helicopter and ski your way down the mountain. Other interesting winter activities include dog sledding, snowmobiling, snow shoeing, ice skating, ice climbing, or the relaxation of a sleigh ride.
Horseback Riding
You may consider the activity one for when snow isn’t covering the ground, but you’d be wrong. Various companies and stables in the area offer horseback rides in the winter as well as the summer months. The route may be modified from a summer jaunt due to weather. Dress in layers to combat the cold weather. Don’t forget your camera to capture all the memories. Some companies offer horse-drawn sleigh rides.
Historic Telluride
If you’re looking for an attraction to explore without going far at all, you’ll be glad you chose Telluride as your vacation spot. The town itself is an attraction to be explored this winter! Wander historic Telluride, designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1964 due to its significant role in the history of the American West. Make your first stop the town museum where you’ll learn about the town’s evolution from Ute tribe summer camp, to mining camp, to boom town, and finally the ski mecca of today. Shop in stores and boutiques, many of which are housed in some of the town’s original buildings that date back to the 1800s.
Fat Tire Mountain Biking
The San Juan mountains surrounding Telluride provide a variety of terrain for a unique riding experience. More advanced bikers can explore more challenging trails that lead down old mining roads, through basins, and high above the box canyon. Longer, more difficult trails join moderate-skill level trails that link former railroad tracks throughout the valley and further west, and there are trails for those just starting their fat tire biking journey, too. If you’re not yet ready for the various elevation changes and thinner air of the mountain trails, stick closer to town at the Telluride Bike Park at the Telluride Ski Resort.
Food Tours
Take a delicious tour of Telluride! If you need to warm up after a day on the slopes, or you’re just looking for your next meal, take a tour! You can choose an organized tour that stops at various Telluride restaurants and bars or blaze your own trail.
